You can view pictures of the project here. It is always a little wierd leaving a project after you have gotten so close to it. I had a great time doing this project and once again I learned so much. We did it all except for excavation, pouring the foundation, hanging and finishing drywall, electrical, plumbing, and putting on the roof. It was so fun to do that it inspired me to make a shed of my own and do something a little different. Here are some pictures of the shed.

Last night, Black Lumber, lumber and hardware store that I always use, threw a party for their contractor customers. Since I am a new contractor this was my first time and I will definitely be going back next year. I think it is really wonderful that they appreciate their customers enough to buy enough steaks, hamburgers, hotdogs, and sides to feed them and their families. I doubt Lowe’s, Menard’s, or The Home Depot do anything like that for their contractor customers. The party is held in their main warehouse and vendors from the different products that they sell set up their booths and you can get information as well as “swag” (free stuff) from them. I learned a little more about some of the different products that I use everyday as well as some products that I will be using soon. They also have doorprizes available from each of those vendors as well as one big door prize that Black Lumber gives away. The guy I work with won an XL golf shirt which he gave to me because he wears a medium at most. I was not so lucky and only walked away with the shirt that he gave me. The grand prize that Blacks was giving away was a stainless steel grill with two side burners. Construction Resources, my first employer in the field of carpentry, won the grill but now they have to somehow split or draw straws to figure out who takes it home.

I have been building a 20′ wide curved window seat/bookcase this past week and I could not be happier. It took a little time to figure some of it out, but the finished product is going to be more than worth it. I have had so much fun building it that I am actually looking forward to Monday morning so I can finish it and take pictures. I have been so pre-occupied with the building of it that I have forgotten to take pictures. I apologize but hopefully Monday night you will be able to see the unpainted but finished product. Also going on at “the house” we have started to put up the handrails around the decks. The top handrail is 2 1/2″ rigid copper pipe and below the top rail, running horizontally every 4 inches, down to 4″ above the deck floor is a 1/4″ stainless steel cable connected to eyehooks with turnbuckles. It will look really cool when it’s all done.
We have also started a new job remodeling a building downtown. It is a huge project but it is going to be a lot of fun. Another ultimate remodel. I have some pictures of it here.

Update: I have uploaded more photos to the Nelson House. Here is the first picture of the curved window seat.

These last few days at work have been kicking my ass. We have just finished one portion of the deck (the largest portion at 26′ x 20′) and after three days of lifting 16′ 6″x6″ posts and then bending over to put the decking down and I am beat. I had been sitting behind a desk for only the past 4 years but in that time I have really gotten out of shape. My knees especially are feeling the pain. I see now that I should have been running or working out a lot more during the past 4 years. No regrets though. I enjoyed the computer work while I did it and I am grateful for the knowledge and experience that I gained but I am so happy to be back at carpentry. I have posted some more pictures of the deck and I will post some more tomorrow. I was too tired today to take any with the decking down.

It has been awhile since my last post so I will fill you in a little. On August 3rd I resigned from my position as a web/database application developer in order to pursue a career in carpentry. Before I started in the IT world four years ago I had been working as a carpenter for about 3 years so this is not such an off the wall transition as it may seem. My official last day as a developer was on August 20th and my first day back as a carpenter was Monday August 23rd. Well it has been one week now that I have been swinging a hammer and it feels like I’m home. My spirits are much higher and my weight is a little lower. This first week was spent putting in windows and that is a lot of hammer work so by Wednesday I was pretty sore but by Friday the pain was gone and I felt like I was back in the swing of things. I am fortunate to work with an older carpenter that I really get along with and he is really talented as far as being able to figure out how to build virtually anything. In the house that we are currently building we will be building a staircase that is suspended from the ceiling by threaded rod that will be wrapped in stainless steel. Another project is a suspension bridge over a small pond, and we will also be building a greenhouse to replace the one that is shown in the pictures. Here are some pictures of the work in progress.
