Well I have been trying to find time to update the look of this site because the other design was just an interim. Well as life would have it I have not had the time or the creative spark to make my own design so I went looking for one that was similar to what I wanted to do and I found it here in Narnia . I am not done tweaking it and it will take some time but I think this is going to be CrookedShack.com. If anyone has any objections let me know. I have ideas of what I want to do but I don’t have the time or the skills. I can learn the skills sure but I need the time in order to learn the skills. I have also started to realize that since I don’t do web work I shouldn’t be spending more time on it than is necessary. I need to spend time on things like my job, my family, and my house since those the most important items right now. I am not done playing with this site but I will be taking a break from thinking about the design and instead will be posting photos and writing posts instead of mulling over whether or not I have the right design and getting caught up in that vicious cycle. I hope you all (2 of you) enjoy.

I have just downloaded Flock and am using it to write this post. I have only played with it for a few minutes but it looks like it is going to be a great piece of software. The blog posting feature is really nice. I wish you could change the font that the editor uses (maybe you can) because I really dislike Times New Roman. The browser has some other great features like publishing your favorites directly to de.li.cious, a history search using the open source search engine Clucene, RSS feed find, tagging of bookmarks, and a feature called The Shelf where you can drag URLs, pictures or text from any web page for saving so that you can blog about it later. This is a developer release but so far it seems pretty stable. You should definitely check it out.

Update:
I tried to publish to my blog using the tool but it did not work. I am using wordpress and that was not an option on the dropdown so it chose MetaWeblog. It successfully wrote to my blog but only I could see it under the admin section. Everytime I tried to view the real URL I got the 404 error. Hrmm

Update 11/03/05:
I have downloaded the latest build of flock and am trying the blog editor again. Let’s see how it goes.

I have been using photostack for my photos section and it has served me well up to a certain point. There have been a couple of things that have annoyed me about it but they were small enough that I let it go since the rest of it worked really well.
The version that I have been using is 2.17b which was released just about a year ago. Noel has finally released the next beta of photostack and I have been playing with it on another site. There are many great improvments but one that really stands out for me is on the user end. If a gallery has a large number of photos and therefore many pages of photos, when a user is pageing through the thumbnails and wants to see the larger view, they click on the thumbnail. Once they have viewed the photo if they would like to go back to the previous page of thumbnails they can now. In version 2.18b or less, if you click the “up a level” link to go back to the thumbnail view you will be taken back to the first page of thumbnails. That is most annoying.
I am really enjoying the new look and layout of the admin section. It uses AJAX for a lot of the editing and is really pretty slick. I do have one issue with the gallery creation section. The gallery folders are created using the script of course but as a result the owner of the gallery folders is apache. That is probably not an issue for anyone using apache without SAFE_MODE turned on, but my host uses SAFE_MODE. Because the gallery folders are owned by apache you cannot write to them i.e. upload photos. I don’t know if there is any way to fix this but I have my fingers crossed.
I have been looking into a couple of other products and one that I have found that is really enticing is Zenphoto. There is a bonus on this one in that it is also set up as a blog. While I like this feature I don’t know if this would draw more comment spam.
A couple of others that are interesting are Simple PHP Gallery and Plogger.
Whatever software I end up using it will take a little work because I will have to set up some kind of redirect in my main .htaccess file to redirect all of the links to photo-posts that are currently out there.

If anyone reading this in a browser other than IE, could take a look at it in IE and let me know what they see, it would be greatly appreciated. When I look at it in IE I don’t see anything except for the background – no text. When I view source though, I see all of the content that should be showing up on the page. Most baffling. I have tried to figure out what is going on and have found no CSS or HTML errors (I’m sure they are there, though) using HTML Tidy and style checker in Topstyle. If anyone reading this has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

Update: The culprit was a script tag pointing to a javascript source file that was not being used. Duh!

The move to WordPress from Movable Type is officially complete. The whole thing was a lot easier than I thought it would be too. I am using the Green Marinee theme while I work on my own design and I am modifying it while I learn more about the WordPress functions and tags. All of the posts, comments and trackbacks imported without a hitch and I didn’t even have to export the MT posts using utf-8 encoding. I was warned that I should convert to utf-8 so that all of the characters would translate properly but after some review I don’t see any errors. I was also able to do something that I have always wanted to do and that is set up an asides or mini-posts section. I was able to implement that with ease using Morgan Doocy’s mini-posts plugin and it works like a charm. I have to modify the code a little to get it to look and display how I want but I had to use something from his website as my first mini-post. I think all will enjoy it. If you see any errors while viewing this site please let me know or refresh your page as I will be working on this site continuously
